Do you have happy childhood memories of snuggling up on the couch and watching fantastic movies such as Home Alone, Toy Story, and Hook? Then you’re not alone! The ‘90s and early ‘00s gave us some truly iconic films that will stay in our minds and hearts forever. A great movie is where everything about it is memorable – plotline, scenes, dialogue, and characters. Especially its characters. Great characters can transform a movie, driving the story forward and leaving us feeling a myriad of emotions. Check out our favourite childhood movie characters here…
Harry Potter - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
How could this list not start with everyone’s favourite wizard, Harry Potter? When the Sorcerer's Stone hit our screens in 2001, Harry stole everyone’s hearts. A bespectacled little boy cast aside by his awful family, he soon learned that he possessed magical powers and went to study at Hogwarts, an English boarding school for learning wizardry. Harry’s bravery and loyalty are what we love him for the most!
Kevin McCallister – Home Alone
Eight-year-old Kevin was the lead character in arguably one of the best Christmas movies of all time – 1990’s Home Alone. When he is left behind when his family travels to France for the Christmas holidays, he must defend his home against two dim-witted burglars. Kevin’s snappy comebacks and quick-thinking have helped him make his way into this list!
Wednesday Addams – The Addams Family
With her pitch-black personality and sadistic sense of humour, there’s no way Wednesday Addams wasn’t making it onto this list. In the 1991 movie The Addams Family, we learnt that she was fascinated by the Bermuda Triangle and admired her Great Aunt Calpurnia who was burned as a witch back in 1706. That says it all about why we love her!
Matilda – Matilda
Matilda became of the best-loved comedies of all times when it hit screens in 1996. Matilda is precocious and clever – the opposite of her boring and selfish family members. Neglected by her parents and picked on by her scary headmistress, she uses her telekinetic abilities to punish them, with hilarious results. Funny and humble, viewers found themselves rooting for her throughout the movie. We loved her sweet relationship with her adorable teacher, Miss Honey.
Woody – Toy Story
Woody is a cowboy doll and the leader of the toys in the 1996 movie Toy Story. He becomes jealous of Buzz Lightyear when his position as Andy’s favourite toy is threatened. By the end of the film, Woody has grown as a person, swapping cowardice for courage and even saving Buzz from Sid, the boy next door who tortures toys just for fun!
Mike Wazowski – Monsters, Inc.
This bright green spherical monster with one eye won our hearts when Monsters, Inc. hit cinemas in 2002. Opinionated and feisty, Mike works at the local energy-producing factory, where skilled monsters called "scarers" travel to the human world to scare children and collect their screams. We love him because he has a heart of gold and is so loyal to his best friend, Sulley.
Willy Wonka – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Johnny Depp brought the character of Willy Wonka to life in the movie’s 2005 remake. The eccentric owner of the Wonka Chocolate Factory is the most famous candy creator in the world. With a larger than life persona and endless energy, he is one of the film’s standout characters. What’s great about Mr Wonka is that he’s not only good at what he does, but he loves what he does too. A lot. After watching this you might get a craving for something delicious and sweet, so take full advantage of our delicious range of Confectionary!
Simba – The Lion King
Our hearts broke in 1994 when baby Simba’s dad Mufasa was killed in The Lion King. He is killed by a stampede of wildebeests after being lured into their path by evil Scar; however, Simba is blamed and leaves his pride in guilt. We loved watching Simba grow from a cub to a lion and take back his homeland. Watching him get his revenge on Scar is a standout movie scene from our childhoods! If your little one loves Disney just as much then you're guaranteed to find them something from their favourite movie with our collection of Disney Toys.
Peter Pan – Hook
Hook is surely one of the biggest movies of the 1990s. In the film, middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning heads back to Neverland, returning to his magical origins as Peter Pan. When Captain Hook kidnaps his kids, Peter must remember who he really is if he wants to see them again. We loved watching Peter’s journey from corporate lawyer to a flying hero in green tights!
Movies we watched as kids really stick with us, conjuring endless happy memories. Some of these films are funny, some are heart-warming, and some are thought-provoking – however, one thing they have in common is that they all have fantastic characters. These are our favourite childhood movie characters and we think we love them just as much now as we did back then!
